Director Bryce McGuire proves that the water is anything but ‘fine’ in his feature debut, “Night Swim.”
Overview
Based on the 2014 short film of the same name, “Night Swim” tells the story of the Waller family and their fight to survive their haunted pool. This suburban nightmare takes cues from horror classics such as Amityville Horror, Poltergeist, and It, while delivering a uniquely strange tale. And with horror juggernauts James Wan and Jason Blum as producers, expectations were high.
“Night Swim” centers on the Waller family and their move to suburbia just outside the Twin Cities. Wyatt Russell is excellent as former major-league baseball player Ray Waller. A man tormented by his own body, he struggles with his multiple sclerosis diagnosis. His wife Eve Waller, portrayed by Oscar nominee Kerry Condon, wants nothing more than to lay down roots and build a good life with him and their two children: Izzy, played by Amélie Hoeferle, and Elliot played by Gavin Warren.
As Ray’s condition worsens, the family searches for a permanent residence close to his treatment facilities and Eve’s workplace. Eventually, they settle on an older house with a dark past, drawn by the promise of a backyard pool that could serve as their oasis. Ray utilizes the pool for his water therapy sessions, the children bond through pool games, and Eve finds a quiet place to relax.
But there’s something in the water and it’s thirsty for blood.
Sure, it sounds like a goofy premise. But “Night Swim” more than compensates for it with an eerie atmosphere, stellar cast performances, and a cheeky sense of humor.
What “Night Swim” Got Right
From the very first frame, “Night Swim” hooks us with its clever foreshadowing and captivating visuals. The upside-down shot of the home’s reflection is a gorgeous and subtle elusion to the climax where characters frantically navigate the depths of the pool, trying to figure out which way is up.
Character-wise, the Wallers are well-written and their struggles are relatable which further invests us in their journey, praying for their victory against the supernatural forces at play.
Where “Night Swim” Excelled
I particularly enjoyed Amélie Hoeferle’s portrayal of Izzy, the eldest daughter. This is the standout performance of the film. As the eldest daughter myself, I relate to her and the emotional weight she carries for the entire family. She shines in every scene she’s in.
In particular, my favorite sequence is the late-night game of Marco Polo between Izzy and her crush. As Izzy stubbornly refuses to open her eyes, it’s equal parts frustrating and exciting. The scene had me on the edge of my seat and digging my nails into my husband’s arm. (Sorry, honey)
But, amidst the spine-chilling terror, there are moments of unexpected levity. The quirky real estate agent, portrayed by Nancy Lenehan, is a delight. Her scenes at the pool party had me laughing out loud, providing much-needed relief from the thick tension.
And while the film’s ending may have been predictable, it delivered a satisfying resolution to the narrative.
What Could Be Workshopped
Certain aspects of the film did detract from its overall impact, though. For instance, the excessive explanation regarding why the pool devours people felt unnecessary. We’re already immersed in the paranormal world of the film; there’s no need to overexplain the magic and madness behind it.
On the other hand, the effects were skillfully executed, lending an air of believability to the supernatural occurrences. However, some of the creatures inhabiting the pool prompted laughter, whether intentionally or not. (My money is on intentionally)
All in all, “Night Swim” offers a fun evening at the cinema with effective jump scares, a spooky premise, and playful humor. I enjoyed it and seriously disagree with its current rating of 21% on Rotten Tomatoes. I wish that its January release date had been pushed closer to the summer months, adding an extra layer of real-life terror about water. Nonetheless, it’s worth checking out and earns a spot on my list of go-to summer horror flicks.
